Redefining Nutrition for Changing Bodies
Many of my clients come to me saying they’re eating well but can’t seem to lose weight — especially as they get older. In Hong Kong, where life moves fast and stress levels are high, hormonal changes often make traditional dieting ineffective. What worked in your 20s or 30s simply doesn’t work the same way anymore.
That’s where nutrition counselling comes in — a personalised approach that helps your body rebalance, burn fat more efficiently, and restore energy without restriction or deprivation. It is fully tailored to your unique needs, making it easier for you to achieve lasting results.
How Nutrition Counselling Supports Hormones & Weight
During menopause, postpartum, adolescence, or periods of high stress, hormones like oestrogen, progesterone, and cortisol naturally fluctuate. These changes can affect metabolism, appetite, and how your body stores fat — often leading to gut imbalances, even when you haven’t changed your diet or lifestyle.
Symptoms such as bloating, new food sensitivities, or unexpected weight gain can seem to appear “out of nowhere,” but they’re often a reflection of hormonal shifts rather than poor habits.
Instead of focusing on “eating less,” my approach centres on smarter nutrition — stabilising blood sugar, supporting liver detoxification, and optimising meal timing. It’s about adapting your lifestyle to your body’s natural changes in a balanced and sustainable way.
Through gentle dietary adjustments, I help clients nourish their bodies to reduce inflammation and cravings while supporting healthy hormone balance. The goal is to help your metabolism work with you again, not against you.
And it’s not just about food. Together, we explore lifestyle habits and introduce simple tools to release stress, improve energy, and restore confidence — helping you feel better in your body from the very beginning.
My method is built on small, realistic steps, not drastic overhauls. Even one manageable change can bring noticeable results and naturally lead to the next. It’s not about quick fixes or crash diets that make you lose five kilos only to regain ten. It’s about creating lasting change and rebuilding a positive, trusting relationship with your body.

Sarah’s Story
Sarah, a 46-year-old teacher, came to me feeling frustrated after experiencing unexplained weight gain and persistent bloating — despite maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise routine.
She had given birth six years earlier, and since then, her bloating had progressively worsened. Her weight had become difficult to manage, stabilising at 75 kg for 1.55 m, even though her calorie intake was very low.
Sarah was extremely disciplined. She ate only twice a day — mostly lean protein such as chicken, eggs, and white meat — avoiding carbohydrates entirely during the week. On weekends, she allowed herself a small indulgence, like one or two slices of pizza. Yet even this modest treat would cause her weight to fluctuate by one or two kilos.
When I reviewed her food diary, it showed an intake of only about 1,200 calories a day, which clearly didn’t explain her ongoing weight gain.
Because her lifestyle and discipline ruled out overeating, we decided to dig deeper. A gut microbiome test revealed a significant dysbiosis — an imbalance in her intestinal flora. This likely developed after pregnancy and was worsened by perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause when hormonal changes begin even though menstruation continues.
Our first step was to gently reintroduce fibre into her diet and shift to three balanced meals a day, including fruits and whole grains — especially at breakfast. We also increased her water intake, which had been quite low. I suspected that her lack of hydration contributed to water retention, explaining the sudden fluctuations in her weight.
With these simple but powerful changes, combined with lymphatic drainage treatments, Sarah began to lose weight steadily — over 5 kilos in three months — and, more importantly, she felt like herself again. She was thrilled to “be able to eat again,” enjoying a more balanced, satisfying diet without guilt or restriction.
Why This Works
The gut microbiome is the center of balance for the entire body. It interacts with every system — especially the hormonal and metabolic systems.
Many diets fail because they treat weight as a calorie problem rather than a whole-body imbalance. When hormones and gut bacteria are disrupted, the body holds onto stress, inflammation, and fluid — triggering more cortisol, more cravings, and ultimately, more weight gain.
Nutrition counselling addresses these root causes — focusing on digestion, sleep, and stress management — to rebalance metabolism from within. Once your system is in harmony, weight loss becomes natural, not forced.
For clients experiencing hormonal or fluid-related weight gain, I often combine nutrition counselling with lymphatic drainage sessions at Vitality Center to enhance detoxification, reduce bloating, and improve circulation. Hypnotherapy sessions can also be extremely useful to help reduce stress, or better manage our relationship with food, sending food as a source of well-being for our body, and less as a source of comfort for our mind.

FAQs
Do I need to follow a strict plan?
No — it’s about realistic, flexible eating that fits your life. We start with a food diary. Not to shame you on what you eat, but to start from your habits, your lifestyle, your favourite food, and gently adapt your diet to one that rebuild gut balance, decrease digestive symptoms and unlock weight loss.
Can this help with menopause or hormonal weight gain?
Yes. Our microbiome is our best ally in maintaining our weight stable. During perimenopause, it is affected. When affected, it can send a message to our body to slow down metabolism and store fat, and this increases hormonal imbalance. It is almost impossible to lose weight when there is a hormonal imbalance like perimenopause. The useful approach then consists of rebuilding the intestine in a holistic and gentle way.
When will I see results?
Most clients notice less bloating very quickly as we identify the foods triggering it through the food diary. Their sleep is improved too. A sustainable weight loss occurs with a pace of around 1 to 2 kg per month.
Do I have to give up my favourite foods?
Not at all. Balance and sustainability are key. If these foods are your favourite, it is possible that it is because your body is craving them. Stopping them will only bring stress, high cortisol, weight gain. Often it is about adding more than giving up : more fibres, more hydration, can already bring you weight loss and balance.
